Melancholia I
In approximately the 76th minute of the film “The Seventh Seal” by Ingmar Bergman, a girl is dragged to a ladder by the people and gypsies of the city and set on fire like a Joan of Arc, but in the meantime she just [watches] and burns without any struggle.
The character above is an adaptation of the sitting angel in “Melancholia I” by Albrecht Dürer, in this work, we see an angel sitting and staring with a caliper in her hand. She is an image of desperation and helplessness, and in her eyes, as Julia Kristeva writes: “She is not the mourner of an object, but a thing”; a vague and unknown thing, “an illusory sun that is both bright and dim”
Melancholia -angel- is not passive, but as if she is stuck in this painting and among these signs, symbols and tools in order to reach the distant light above this arrangement, similar to contemporary human beings that we are and trying to do something and to have action, but with a depressed body and we just look with unspeakable sadness.
